Venezuela Hit by Successive Magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 Earthquakes on June 24

Venezuela was hit by rare doublet earthquakes of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 on June 24. Shallow depths and unreinforced buildings amplified the destruction, leaving over 1,700 dead and 60,000 missing by June 30. Damage is estimated up to USD 7.77B, centered near three long-dormant fault lines.

Safety and Security Earthquake

Two back-to-back earthquakes hit Venezuela, on Wednesday, June 24, 6:04PM VET (6:04AM PHT): the first one was a magnitude 7.2 earthquake which occurred around 24 kilometers northeast of San Felipe, Venezuela; the second stronger earthquake of a magnitude 7.5 followed shortly and was centered approximately 5 kilometers away from the initial epicenter. The epicenters were located approximately 160 kilometers west of Caracas, the country’s capital town. Initial reports identify the epicenter to be surrounded by three significant fault lines, the Boconó, El Guayabo, and Morón faults, which have not recorded major movements in over 200 years.
