Congress Elects its Committee Chairpersons for the 20th Congress

Members of the House of Representatives and the Senate have competed for a slice of the Congressional leadership pie, with the Duterte bloc emerging as the victors.  In this latest committee chairmanships race under the 20th Congress, PSA notes that members of the Duterte-bloc – Senators whose political affiliations lean more to the Duterte family – bagged 24 committee chairperson positions. Senator Alan Peter Cayetano alone holds the most, with four committees under him. Analysts interpret this as an indication that they are the power bloc to contend with this 20th Congress, and more so in the 2028 elections. Shortly after the opening of the 20th Congress with the State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the Senate and the House of Representatives elected the chairpersons of their respective legislative committees. These chairpersons will be responsible for holding hearings on the different bills filed that are relevant to their respective committees.
