Congress Passes Law Postponing Bangsamoro Polls to October 2025; Law Now Up for President Marcos’ Approval

Congress ratified a bill postponing the first Bangsamoro parliamentary elections from May to October 13. Regional officials support the 5-month delay to amend electoral laws, reapportion seats following the exclusion of Sulu province, and advance regional peace efforts.

Congress has ratified today the Bangsamoro Parliamentary Election postponement bill at the bicameral conference committee, a few hours after they began deliberations at the bicameral level. The official position of Congress is that the elections will be postponed for five months, deferring the polls to October 13 from May 12. The swift development comes almost a week after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. asked Congress to speed up the passage of the Senate bill that seeks to postpone the first Bangsamoro parliamentary elections from May to October this year. Analysts note that President Marcos will likely sign and approve the law, as some lawmakers disclosed that it was Malacañang that ordered to keep the postponement short. Nonetheless, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) and Bangsamoro officials stated that they will continue to lay the preparations for the parliamentary polls in May this year until the law deferring the polls is passed.
