Malaysian Prime Minister (PM) Anwar Ibrahim recently expressed heightened concern over increased US-Philippine military presence near Sabah, a contested island between Malaysia and the Philippines. This development comes after the Philippine government allowed United States (US) forces to maintain a presence on Balabac Island of Palawan, approximately 50 kilometers from Sabah, as part of the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) between US and Philippine forces. PM Ibrahim voiced concerns about recent upgrades on the island, including the expansion of a three-kilometer airstrip and improvements to strategic facilities. He stated that Malaysia remains concerned about the Philippines’ maintenance of its territorial claim to Sabah, even though bilateral relations between the Philippines and Malaysia remain cordial.
