Philippines Weekly Brief - May 05, 2026

Alert levels for Mayon and Taal volcanoes remain unchanged despite recent activity. Meanwhile, Labor Day protests saw minor scuffles in Manila. Politically, the House Committee adopted impeachment articles against VP Duterte, while Japanese nationals face robbery risks in Metro Manila.

Philippines Weekly Brief - May 05, 2026
Several observers noted that this year’s Labor day protests were relatively larger than in previous years, likely due to the convergence of groups advancing both labor-related advocacies and grievances driven by worsening economic conditions.

Mayon, Taal Volcano Alert Levels Remain Unchanged

Alert levels for both Mayon Volcano in Albay and Taal Volcano in Batangas remained unchanged after a series of recorded volcanic activity.

Mayon Volcano

At 2:41 am on May 1, ash plumes were observed being released approximately 100 meters above the volcano’s crater, followed by a short-lived lava fountaining at 8:05 pm. Currently, Mayon Volcano remains under Alert 3, defined as a high level of unrest manifesting through sustained increases in volcanic earthquakes, increases in emissions, lava flow, and resulting rockfall.
