Authorities Investigate Parañaque Condominium Shooting
A fatal shooting at Azure Residences in Paranaque has prompted a Senate investigation into property management negligence and security response times. While gun violence in the Philippines is typically targeted, the incident highlights risks of personal disputes escalating in public spaces.
Two individuals were killed while at least four others sustained injuries after a 59-year-old unit owner opened fire on a group playing at the basketball court of Azure Residences in Parañaque City. Authorities are eyeing a series of previous altercations between one of the victims and the suspect - a wanted man with a pending warrant of arrest for homicide - as a possible motive behind the attack that occurred around 7:59 PM on March 4.
Two days after the incident, authorities arrested the suspect at his wife’s condominium unit in barangay Moonwalk, Parañaque City on March 6, after locals reported his presence to the authorities. Seized from the suspect were two firearms, four magazines and 47 rounds of ammunition.
The links between the suspect and the two fatalities remain unclear as of writing. What authorities have clearly established based on the footage of the incident was that the suspect shot the first victim, a 57-year-old male who is a resident of the condominium. The suspect then ran inside the basketball court and shot the second victim, a 29-year-old male who is a unit tenant, while indiscriminately firing towards other individuals who were playing inside the facility.

Senator Raffy Tulfo intends to file a resolution seeking to investigate the shooting incident along with the alleged negligence of Azure Residences’ management. In his radio show Raffy Tulfo in Action, Senator Tulfo expressed his concerns about how certain properties seem to prioritize damage control over urgently responding to incidents occurring within their premises. The mother of the second victim, who appeared at the Senator’s radio show, said that the condominium security took more than 30 minutes before they attended to the victim, who appeared to have still been alive after he was shot.
PSA notes that gun attacks in the Philippines are usually targeted and not random in nature. At least three incidents, including the incident at Azure Residences, in recent times were initially considered as possibly mass shootings but were later discovered to be targeted, albeit with several civilians who were unfortunately caught in the crossfire. Two of the other incidents include the July 2022 assassination attack in Ateneo de Manila University that killed three and injured three, and the 2017 Resorts World Manila Attack that killed at least 36 mainly from a subsequent fire.
In general, the Philippines has a well-documented gun culture, with widespread civilian firearm ownership and the continued circulation of unregistered or homemade weapons. This increases the likelihood of personal disputes and local tensions escalating to gun violence.
