Kidnapping-Related Incidents – June 2023
In June 2023, PSA Intelligence recorded two (2) kidnapping incidents.
Two of the kidnapping incidents recorded in June 2023 were personal dispute-related, while one incident was perpetrated by a Kidnap-for-Ransom (KFR) group. Analysts note that only the latter incident demanded a ransom payment of PHP 14 million (USD 252,106.89).
Four kidnap victims – a Chinese national and three Filipinos – were reported for the month of June. Meanwhile, no kidnapping incidents targeting Western nationals were recorded during the month. Based on the recorded incidents, one abduction occurred within Metro Manila, while the other incidents took place in the provinces of Iloilo and Camarines Sur.
None of the kidnapping incidents recorded in June resulted in the demise of victims. Based on PSA data, one abduction was perpetrated by a KFR group targeting one Chinese national. The same incident was also related to Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO), wherein the suspects abducted a Chinese POGO manager. Analysts note that POGO/gambling-related abductions are a recurring and systemic issue. There were more POGO/gambling-related incidents in the previous years, but a few incidents are still being recorded each month since February 2021.
PSA recorded three successful kidnap rescue operations this month. The operations were in response to one KFR incident and two personal dispute-related incidents. The victims were held by their captors for two to 24 days prior to their rescue.
