Kidnapping-Related Incidents – February 2022
In February 2022, PSA Intelligence recorded fourteen (14) kidnapping incidents.
Most of the kidnapping incidents recorded in February 2022 were personal dispute-related. Out of the total number of kidnapping incidents this month, 11 incidents were personal dispute-related, two incidents were perpetrated by a Kidnap-for-Ransom (KFR) group, and one incident was POGO-related. Based on the recorded incidents, there was only one incident where the abductors demanded ransom money. However, the value of the ransom money was not disclosed.
There have been 20 kidnap victims reported in February, 14 of them were foreign victims – 12 Chinese nationals, one Taiwanese, and one Malaysian man. PSA recorded no kidnapping incidents targeting Western nationals this month. Based on the recorded incidents, nine abductions occurred within Metro Manila, while the other incidents took place in the provinces of Abra, Isabela, Camarines Norte, Lanao del Norte, and Maguindanao.
Out of the 14 abductions this month, one incident resulted in the demise of victims. The incident was perpetrated by unidentified armed suspects who targeted two businessmen. Analysts note that the suspects seemed to have other motivation than abducting the victims. The incident appeared to have been done to transfer the victims to another location for eventual execution.
PSA recorded eight successful kidnap rescue operations this month. The operations were in response to one POGO-related, one KFR, and six personal dispute-related abductions targeting 10 Chinese nationals, one Taiwanese, one Malaysian, and one Filipino. The victims were held by their captors one day to 24 days prior to their rescue.
